Carbon8 now leads the Printovation Awards medal tally after winning its second consecutive ’embellishment’ gong.

The Sydney digital house, which also took out the ‘digital non-variable’ category last year, is the first printer to have pocketed three gold medals since Printovation was launched in 2010.

Three other gold medallists from the 3 October awards dinner can now call themselves two-time winners.

Eleven Eleven Design won the ‘offset’ category for the second consecutive year. Look Print added a ‘digital variable’ gong to the ‘wife-format’ award it won in 2010. Nulab Group won the ‘wide-format’ award as it did in 2011.

The only other two-time winner is Superior Foil Print, which won gold medals in 2011 and 2012.

Another three gold medals were handed out in 2013: Immij claimed ‘offset – point of sale’, Momento Pro took out ‘digital non-variable’ and New Zealand firm Arria Design won the ‘general’ category.

Highly commended nods were given to Carbon8, Digitalpress, SOS Print & Media Group and Metropolis Inc.

GASA general manager Garry Knespal said Printovation differed from the PICAs because the judges focused on innovation and creativity rather than just quality.

Entry numbers were 30% up on 2012, which in turn was double the 2011 figure, according to GASA.

The awards dinner was held at Dockside restaurant in Sydney. Newsreader John Mangos hosted the event.
