Q&A: Jake Thomas, Emroy Print & Design

What would be your dream job?

I’m doing it. Ever since I launched my own print business five years ago, I’ve never been happier.

Which superpower would you like?

Superhuman longevity. Imagine the things you could accomplish if you lived for hundreds of years.

Who or what makes you laugh?

My partner, who works in the business with me, and I have a very similar sense of humour. Whenever I’m feeling worn out, he’s always able to pick up my spirits.

What was your childhood obsession?

Space has always been fascinating to me; as a child I used to gaze up to the skies hoping to spot an alien spaceship.

If you didn’t work in print, what would you be doing?

If I wasn’t working in print, I would assume it’s because I’ve already made an absolute fortune and could retire early. So I’d buy a private island, spend a few years – or a few decades if I had superhuman longevity – and then return and start another business.

What is your favourite piece of kit?

The notepad and pen I have on my bedside table. My best ideas seem to come to me when I’m drifting off to sleep, so I reluctantly, half-asleep jot them down on the notepad and try to decipher them in the morning.

What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?

The best piece of advice was from my mother, when I was younger. I used to watch cartoons and thought I could fly. Alas, I didn’t listen to her and broke both my arms trying. The best piece of advice I’ve listened to in relation to business would be to never overcapitalise.
