Tegan Henderson, who completed her Diploma of Printing and Graphic Arts (Multimedia), was named Graduate of the Year at the presentation on Tuesday 6 December.

Daniel Menkens, an apprentice in printing and finishing at Signs Publishing Company in Warburton, east of Melbourne, was named Apprentice of the Year.

Outstanding final-level student Ingrid Horton declared herself  “dumbfounded” at news she had been recognised with a Diploma of Graphic Design Graduate Travel Scholarship.

The beaming trio, all from RMIT’s University’s International Centre for Graphic Technology (ICGT), accepted their Collie Print Trust-sponsored accolades in front of teachers, family and friends during the awards ceremony at the school Brunswick campus

The awards covered the 2010 and 2011 academic years, and were hosted by Keith Cowlishaw, head of school, Design TAFE.

Two of the frontrunners also secured further awards. Tegan Henderson was also declared the 2011 winner of the Victorian Historic Racing Register Award for a poster promoting the landmark Phillip Island race, and a 2010 winner of a $2,000 Collie Print Trust Scholarship.

Daniel Menkens also won an Australian Print Finishers Association Award, in the form of a $500 scholarship, a $1,000 Collie Print Trust Scholarship, and an Excellence Award in Level 3 Print Finishing.

ICGT director Simon Cochaud welcomed guests and drew their attention to a brochure sampling students’ work, printed on the ICGT’s eight-colour Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 52, including PMS metallics, with text printed on the Currie Group’s HP Indigo 5000, Agfa pre-press and speciality stock from KW Doggett. The program of awards was printed on Fuji Xerox equipment.

Sarah Jones, a teacher at ICGT, and Nicolas Sharp, 2009 Apprentice of the Year, gave updates of their involvement with the World Skills event in Taiwan, and Nicolas reported on his visits to print and design museums in Germany and London.

At the end of the presentation, Cochaud took guests on a tour of ICGT’s new-look press hall, following a $375,000 refurbishment announced at the start of this year.

The upgrades include a purpose-built climate controlled pre-press facility, a revamped Agfa CTP system, wide-format proofing, desktop devices and integrated colour management and workflow.
