Printers may be able to save some cash by doing their own compliance electrical testing and tagging – the subject of the next PIAA webinar and a new Better Business service. The 1pm online session on Wednesday September 10 will be staged by Tag & Testing Training, a new PIAA Better Business partner and RTO that provides accredited training and supplies to the electrical safety industry in Australia and New Zealand. Jason Kiekebosch, director of Tag & Test Training, says many companies do not realise that testing and tagging can be undertaken by their own staff without the need to engage an external service provider.

He says, “There is no need to be an electrician and with some basic training internal staff can carry out testing and tagging in your workplace. “Aside from the overall cost saving in self-compliance, it can also be advantageous to productivity in that you can access areas of the business at a time that is most suitable with production requirements.” Electrical test and tagging is an OHSW responsibility to ensure portable electrical appliances are regularly checked and tested and safe for use to Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760 and 3012. It involves visually inspecting and electrically testing in-service electrical equipment for personal safety, a task usually carried out by an electrical contractor or specialist test and tag company. At the webinar Kiekebosch will offer PIAA members staff training and equipment for DIY test and tagging, and an explanation of workplace health and safety (WHS) obligations in relation to electrical safety. The new service, available through the PIAA’s Better Business website, will cover testing and tagging to AS/NZS 3760 and the printing industry, and how to minimise its impact.
