Tech guide: Entry level digital

CANON IMAGEPRESS C800 SERIES

Since its launch in mid-2014, the imagePress C800 Series has established itself as one of the most popular digital colour presses in Australia. What has drawn print businesses to the new Canon model is its combination of image quality, productivity, flexibility and versatile workflow that has seen the imagePress C800 Series become the central workhorse for many print operations.

The imagePress C700/C800 incorporates a range of innovative, new and proven technologies to deliver colour print quality. Canon says that ultra high resolution imaging, new toner technology and enhanced colour management tools help deliver rich, vibrant images with the accuracy, consistency and repeatability that customers demand. Canon’s Gloss Optimisation technology allows a gloss finish on coated stocks, and a flat, matt finish or textured or uncoated stocks.

Features that address the needs of the print-for-pay market include full engine speed on paper up to 220gsm, with stepped slowdown as materials get heavier. SRA3 print speed is virtually on parity with A3 – up to 40 ppm on paper up to 220 gsm. The imagePress C800 Series has three models in the family, with throughput of 80, 70 or 60 A4 ppm.

The imagePress has inline finishing options that can meet the needs of most print operations. It gives printers the flexibility to tailor a solution that best meets their business needs – whether it is to produce flat sheets in a tight space for proofing, or finishing offline, or to efficiently produce an array of automated finished jobs such as full bleed saddle-stitch booklets or perfect bound books.

Canon also offers a range of print controller options for the imagePress C800 series, including two EFI controllers – that feature the latest Fiery FS150 system – and the Canon Prismasync controller with its award-winning ease-of-use concepts designed to cope with a print operation’s growing volume of smaller print jobs. Canon says it means that it offers a controller with the features and functionality that best integrate seamlessly into existing print workflows.

KONICA MINOLTA BIZHUB PRO C1060L

Konica Minolta’s entry level colour digital product for printing professionals is the bizhub PRO C1060L system. The system allows a multitude of paper input, inline finishing and print controller options, and can be supplied in a basic configuration that has flat sheet capabilities to produce 60 pages per minute in both colour and monochrome.

The bizhub PRO C1060L, Konica Minolta’s fourth generation production colour system, is a completely new print platform designed for print professionals. This new design is in tune with what print professionals look for in a colour print system, says Konica Minolta.

The PRO C1060L system has proven to be a popular choice for entry level print requirements for quality colour print and reliability. Typical print jobs include business cards, promotional material, educational documents, general images and documents, and marketing material such as brochures and booklets. The PRO C1060L can print jobs on sheet sizes from A5 to SRA3, and with the addition of inline finishing, post inserting, hole punching, stapled sheets and even saddle-stitched booklets can be produced easily.

To cater to varied customer needs and workflow requirements, two print controllers are supported on the bizhub PRO C1060L system. These include the EFI Fiery IC-415 embedded controller allowing full use of EFI’s standard features such as Command Work Station for job management, and more advanced features such as Compose and Impose for print layout and document design.

The Konica Minolta embedded print controller, the IC-602, represents high performance and full integration to the print system at an affordable cost. The IC-602 is a fully integrated controller, and adds other features that add value to document changes at the machine panel and through the network user interface.

The bizhub PRO C1060L offers production speeds of 60ipm in colour or monochrome printing, with print quality and speeds assured by Konica Minolta’s control colour and process calibrations while printing.

For the first time, on this colour model Konica Minolta has introduced an A4 click charge for corporate markets that still use A4 size for up to 80 per cent of their work. This makes for a very economical CPC model that can reduce corporate cost on produced print. For print providers there is still a single sheet click charge that covers up to an SRA3 sheet size.

Konica Minolta’s service offering covers its entire range of print systems, with two-hour service response across its direct operations. The Production Print designated helpdesk is normally the first point of contact for customers, with fully trained technicians on the phone to answer and help resolve any issues.

Production print operator training is supplied by dedicated PPG specialised trainers, and starts at the company’s showroom facilities, where client print staff come in for a full day’s training on their new print system. This initial training allows operators to receive a full uninterrupted session to get hands on and understand the system and all the peripherals. Once the client’s new print system is installed on site, a trainer will attend the site for a further half day’s training, to help operators in their own environment and solve any initial issues that may require more specific instructions and training.

The bizhub PRO C1060L is available in the base configuration for around $52,500 ex-GST, depending on the print controller chosen and specific additional options that are required in the system. This includes delivery, installation and specialised operator training.
