Update: EFI acquires Metrix Software, reports “terrific increase in profitability”

EFI has posted a record revenue result the day after announcing its acquisition of workflow supplier Metrix Software.

The Metrix team has joined EFI, including Metrix chief executive and founder Rohan Holt, who has been appointed director of EFI Metrix products.

EFI did not disclose the terms of the deal, but said it was not expected to make a significant impact on its 2013 calendar year results.

The company also said it would continue development and customer support for all of Metrix's products and would maintain Metrix’s existing reseller and channel arrangements.

"Metrix’s technology offering will also expand to serve as an integrated impositioning module for EFI’s Pace MIS product. Over time, Metrix’s technology will also become integrated with EFI’s other MIS and ERP workflow offerings."

EFI interim chief financial officer Marc Olin said the two companies had had a positive working relationship for several years.

"Adding the Metrix team’s exceptional talent and technical know-how helps us drive innovation even further, ensuring that EFI customers can continue to reduce the cost and improve the profitability of their printing operations," added Olin.

Metrix founder Rohan Holt said: "EFI is the leader in print production workflow and I know our worldwide customer base will benefit enormously from the new level of integration with EFI’s products."

Meanwhile, EFI announced that its revenue for the third quarter of the calendar year had risen 16% year-on-year to a record US$178.8 million ($185.2 million). Net profit for the quarter climbed 20.1% to US$16.1 million.

Revenue for the nine months to 30 September 2013 grew 11% to US$530.5 million, while net profit jumped 27% to US$33.9 million.

EFI chief executive Guy Gecht hailed the "very strong third quarter" and "terrific increase in profitability".

"With new breakthrough products across our portfolio, we expect the demand to continue as EFI's innovation helps customers around the globe win new business and boost productivity," he said.

Update: ProPrint received a comment from Metrix founder Rohan Holt after the article was published.

Holt told ProPrint that Metrix had about 20 Australian clients, and more in New Zealand, and that they could expect to benefit from Metrix's partnership with "the biggest player in the MIS space worldwide".

"Anyone who knows me knows that Metrix was born from a vision to automate, as much as possible, the print planning process. To work, such automation requires a high degree of integration," he said.

"For a small vendor like us, this created some significant challenges achieving the level of integration and automation we wanted to provide our customers. So, when the opportunity arose to join the world's largest print MIS vendor and to work directly on the low-level integration we know our customers need, it wasn't really a tough decision."

Holt added: "For the last several years we have handled support and sales for Australian customers from our US and Belgian offices, though we've still had engineering in Australia.  EFI has an office in Brisbane and is very interested in expanding its presence in Australia. So I believe both sales and service in Australia will undoubtedly improve going into the future."
