Webinar to explain consumer laws

Printers wanting information about consumer laws and how it affects them can tune into PIAA’s free webinar tomorrow (Wednesday) to understand how the proposed changes may affect them.

The 30-minute webinar at 1pm AEST will provide an overview of consumer laws for Australian printers focusing on their responsibilities, liabilities and proposed future changes.

Michelle Blewett, Printing Industries’ legal advisor, will be conducting the information session, and says print businesses are no different to any other business in the application of consumer laws.

Blewett says, “In fact because repetitive copies of printed goods are sold in volume, there is a greater risk to the business that owners need to be aware of.

“Areas of challenge from customers under consumer laws can include what is deemed to be acceptable quality, and whether it is fit for specified purpose.

“Another area of high risk is consequential loss – how you can be held responsible if your actions, for example late delivery, cause a commercial loss to your client.”

She says the warranties are ‘legally binding’ on companies, which can also include a ‘verbal promise’ to do something.

“There are many existing and some new legislative changes that affect the way printing companies do business and we encourage management at all levels to make themselves aware of these by attending this webinar,” Blewett adds.

The following topics will be discussed at the webinar, which will include a 15 minutes Q&A session at the end.

  • Consumer guarantees
  • Obligations and liabilities for business
  • Warranties
  • Unfair contract terms
  • Misleading and deceptive conduct
  • Sales practices
  • Future reform possibilities
