World’s widest web offset press begins printing

It is printing – with one cylinder revolution – 72 A4 four-colour pages or 80 pages in narrower formats. Mohn, one of Europe’s leading providers of print services, is based in Gütersloh, Germany. It added this new press to an already comprehensive machine park.

The new Lithoman from MAN Roland will print high quality catalogues and other high-volume products.

The 80-page Lithoman, with a cut-off length of 1,240 mm, differs from the 64-page models mainly by its web width of 2,060 mm versus their 1,905 mm. In production quality, construction and run performance the models are identical.

All Lithoman printing units are equipped with the automated Power Plate Loading system (PPL) and use film-type inking units and blanket-washing systems.

The 80-page press also incudes components like webbing-up system, folder with five turner bars for guidance of the five individual ribbons, QTI colour and cut-off register as well as QTI ink density control device, folder in 2:5:5 cylinder ratio with magnetic brake for the quarter fold, and central console control with the Pecom printnet module.

Markus Dohle, president of Mohn Media Group says, “It’s been our strategy for many years to invest early in innovative technology so as to benefit from new possibilities at the earliest times. Partnerships with our suppliers led the way with CTP as with the 64-page technology.

“Our development teams identified an early opportunity into the benefits of the new 80-page technology.”

To ensure print quality, Mohn is committed to continual long term investment – with the added advantage of efficiencies and cost savings for their customers.

Dohle says, “We expect the new press to perform at a maximum production speed of 45,000 cylinder revolutions per hour. That enables us to print long-run work with particularly high efficiency.”

In thanking the MAN Roland team for the way in which it had supported the installation of the new Lithoman, Dohle says: “It took only two months from delivery from the first press components to the start of test printing. This is proof of the high professionalism and planning that has marked the cooperation between the project teams from MAN Roland and Mohn Media.”

Hartmut Massierer, executive vice president Commercial Production Systems Business Unit at MAN Roland says, “I am very happy about Mohn Media’s renewed trust in us. Over the past ten years, we have not only increased the web width of our heatset presses but also boosted the speed by about 40 per cent.

“Productivity has been nearly doubled. As technology leader and unchallenged market leader in the segment of high-volume offset, MAN Roland has decisively influenced its development. With the new Lithoman, Mohn Media owns the most productive press on the market today.”
