Sydney printer celebrates employee’s Oscar win

Dave Elsey (pictured right) works on The Dark Detective: Sherlock Holmes, the most popular comic at Jeffries’ publishing arm, Black House Comics. He picked up the Academy Award for Best Makeup yesterday for his work on The Wolfman with special effects artist Rick Baker (pictured left).

Elsey is the co-creator, storyline artist and cover artist of The Dark Detective. He had previously been nominated for his work on Star Wars: Episode III in 2006, but missed out.

Jeffries prints The Dark Detective comic book along with many others, but also does corporate work for clients such as Labor NSW.

Black House Comics was established by Kirgan with the aim of providing printing and publishing services for Australian comic artists and writers.

Kirgan said his company would not usually be able to afford Elsey’s talents, but it is work a passion for Elsey the British ex-pat.

“Dave is a huge fan of the Sherlock Holmes franchise and a great guy to have onboard,” he said.

“Working with his idol Rick Baker was also a big deal for Dave. We actually used Rick as a model for our character of Professor Moriarty in The Dark Detective.”

The Revesby company runs a fleet of printing presses, including two A2 Komoris.
