Apple disrupts with new print book

Global technology giant Apple has subverted its digital tradition with the release of a printed photo book celebrating the last twenty years of Apple products.

The coffee table tome, called Designed by Apple in California chronicles twenty years worth of Apple design, in a 450-page, linen-bound, hardcover volume. It simply displays hundreds of Apple product images, ranging from the first iMac in 1998 to 2015’s Apple Pencil.

Apple chief design officer Jony Ive says, “The idea of genuinely trying to make something great for humanity was Steve Job’s motivation from the beginning, and it remains both our ideal and our goal as Apple looks to the future.”

“This archive is intended to be a gentle gathering of many of the products the team has designed over the years. We hope it brings some understanding to how and why they exist, while serving as a resource for students of all design disciplines.”

Designed by Apple in California is available in selected countries, including Australia, in two sizes and printed on specially milled, custom-dyed paper with gilded matte silver edges, using eight colour separations and low-ghost ink.

The linen-bound, hardcover volume was photographed and developed over an eight-year period, and was published and printed by Apple at its California headquarters.

Apple’s first printed product is dedicated to the memory of its late founder Steve Jobs. It is available in Apple stores across the world including the Apple store in Sydney CBD in large for $395 or small for $265.
