Bidding starts on Bellmac auction

An online auction for all the equipment of Sydney’s Bellmac Cartons is currently underway. The bidding commenced at 9am this morning and will end at 5pm on Tuesday, November 15.

Bellmac Cartons was a family-run business established by former owner Michael Bellamy’s father in 1973.

Bellamy sold the business earlier this month to another family-owned company, Johnson’s Packaging.

He tells Australian Printer, “Basically the business was getting on and I am looking into retirement and there is no one in the family to take over the business, which is why we sold.”

Bellmac Cartons employed a workforce of seven people, however only two will stay on with the new company called Johnson’s Packaging & Bellmac Cartons.

Bellamy will also remain with the company on a consultancy basis for the next few months to ensure operations run smoothly.

“The sale so far is going very well, I am impressed with how Johnson’s has handled it and it seems to be a professional outfit,” Bellamy says.

“Johnson’s Packaging is a family company, they have been in the packaging industry for many years, having been around since 1973 or maybe even slightly earlier.”

Up for auction is Bellmac’s main press, a 5-colour Roland Rekord RFK which was built in 1982 and has been maintained well over the years, according to Bellamy.

Also attracting interest is an extra-large sheet Heidelberg SBD and a 1987 Polar 115EMC-MON guillotine with manuals and tools.

Bellamy reports there has been quite a bit of action already with one creasing and cutting machine sold before the auction even got underway.
