Computershare throws support behind Australian Paper’s sustainability endeavour

Australian Paper’s Tonne of Value report is a detailed breakdown of the economic, social and environmental values of each tonne of paper sold by the company.

The statement, which the company called an “Australian first”, took 18 months to organise and was audited by Ernst & Young. It is based on guidelines from the Global Reporting Initiative.

Computershare global chairman for communication services David Hynes said the report had given the company confidence in using Australian Paper as a supplier.

“We’re committed to and have rolled out sustainable communications and where paper is used, we look globally for the most environmentally sound and credible paper,” he said.

“The whole Tonne of Value campaign extends that work, because it is measuring and reporting the paper’s full attributes, not just environmentally, but socially and economically,” said Hynes.

Australian Paper general manager of packaging Paul Allen said the information report would give printers the opportunity to be transparent with customers in terms of their paper sustainability.

“Companies that choose Australian Paper will now be able to report on the impacts of that usage against globally recognised metrics, and can be confident of the value their purchase decision brings to the Australian economy.

“We are proud to be able to join with our customers in a rigorous approach to reporting non-financial information and are confident that this will add value to our customers and our own operations,” added Allen.
