Griffin moves into the educational book sector with global deal

Griffin Press, a subsidiary of PMP, used the London Book Fair in April to announce the launch of Global Print Solutions (GPS), a collaboration with CPIgroup in the UK, Edward Brothers in the US and Markono in Singapore.

National sales manager Warren Griffin said the Adelaide-based printer had been enjoying the fruits of its relationship with CPIgroup for over a year, with the other printers jumping on board recently.

He added that the benefit of being able to provide on-demand books in a quick turnaround time helped Griffin win a contract with a “major educational publisher”.

“We have brought in new work as a direct result of this deal,” he said.

“The work has moved Griffin from not just being a ‘read for pleasure’ book printer but an educational book printer as well.”

The agreement allows Griffin to use five printing sites across the UK as well as various printing sites in the US and Singapore.

Griffin general manager Ben Jolly said: “Publishing is a truly global business and last year we identified a growing need for customers to expand into overseas markets and meet international orders, quickly and efficiently.

“When customers use GPS, Griffin Press can seamlessly order their content for manufacture – in Australia, Europe, North America or Asia – at a consistent unit price. Ordering in Australia and manufacturing near the end user means publishers can make significant savings in time and cost.”

Opus Print Group, parent company of educational printing specialist Ligare, was also at the London Book Fair. In late March, Opus chief executive Cliff Brigstocke told ProPrint that the company had struck up alliances with British firms Hobbs the Printers and MPG Books Group (UK) as part of a global push as the market changes from regional to global procurement.

“The alliances will offer on-shore printing of time-sensitive, short-run products for publishers in the UK with [Opus subsidiary] COS in Singapore continuing to look after the long-run work,” he said.
