Optimising print production with Océ at drupa

Andreas Lübbers, who heads Océ’s Graphics Industry business, explains the concept: “What matters to us is the big picture—the customer’s total business processes, not just the printing.”

Océ’s new consultancy concept is a structured framework for helping commercial printers analyse their business, define system solutions and market print products and other services.

Qualified Océ personnel will be joined at the booth by representatives of a management consultancy specialising in the graphic arts industry. This focus on professional services is Océ’s response to evolving demands on the market for print products.

Innovative print solutions

Geared to three vertical segments – publishing, marketing & promotion, and industry, trade & services – the print lines at the Océ booth are very much attuned to what markets are asking for.

Océ is presenting an innovative line-up of print solutions with real-life applications, plus a spectacular show to introduce its three big product innovations: the Océ CPS900, Océ VarioStream 9000 and Arizona 60 UV Sign Printer.

As a strategic partner of Océ, the Stralfors company is exhibiting its equipment in several integrated production lines at the Océ booth.

Real-life applications

Raising the benchmark for quality and cost efficiency, the recently launched Océ VarioStream 9000 will be producing high quality books on demand in a nearline configuration with an MBO digital folder, Wohlenberg Quickbinder and in an inline configuration with Stralfors equipment.

All attached hardware components have a UP³I interface, which creates a fully integrated line and keeps setup times to a minimum. Cost efficiency is increased further by Océ PRISMA software modules such as Océ PRISMAweb for electronic order handling, and various scan and proofing tools.

Océ is also presenting the new digital colour technology platform, the VarioStream 9000, in two other configurations. On one line, the system will be producing conference documents and operating manuals, with an online IBIS saddle-stitching module for continued productivity downstream of the printer.

Next door to the Océ booth in the PrintCity Factory, the system will be printing the latest issues of international newspapers.

Complementing both the booklet and newspaper-printing lines is pre- and post-processing equipment by strategic partner, Hunkeler.

The Océ VarioStream 7000, with its speed of up to 1,200 A4 pages per minute, will be printing a high quality dictionary with graphic arts terminology in five languages. The dictionaries are thread-stitched and bound at a partner booth.

Making its debut showing at drupa 2004 will be Océ’s fastest cutsheet press, the Océ VarioPrint 5000 with integrated finishing functions, Océ CustomTone and an inline Duplo Bookletmaker. All components communicate via the UP³I interface, which minimises setup times due to job changes.

The CPS900, Océ’s new full-colour digital press, features excellent consistency in print quality, and will be printing offset-quality covers for books and catalogues.

In a live demonstration, the Océ Arizona 60 UV Sign Printer is printing signs with its six-colour printing technique. The use of UV-curable inks makes this entry-level model ideal for all indoor and outdoor applications.

Online design and ordering of business cards is the spotlight issue for the Océ CPS700 colour press. With simplified production of personalised documents and end-to-end workflow automation, service providers can benefit from a shorter time to revenue.

Joint showing with PrintCity

The nearby PrintCity Factory on the joint PrintCity booth is staging a special project show titled “Beast”, the project simulates the launch of a perfume, and the PrintCity partners will be running an integrated production landscape delivering the full gamut of prints for a product rollout, from packaging to mailing.

Océ will be represented by the Océ Arizona T220UV flatbed inkjet printer for printing posters. Fresh from its debut showing at the recent Océ OpenHouse in Poing, the Arizona T220UV features huge media versatility and extremely short drying times that permit output at productiongrade speeds. Our second representative is the Océ CPS900, which is printing full-colour mailshots.

Partnerships for power

Strategic alliances with best-in-class partners are key to Océ’s market philosophy. Printing systems by Océ combined with integrated pre- and post-processing equipment by its partners will also be on show at the Hunkeler, Duplo, PFE, Ehret Control, Bielomatik and Müller-Martini booths.

Making document workflows more efficient

Océ will present the first JDF-based Océ PRISMA® software at the JDF stand at drupa 2004. Océ is committed to incorporating the Job Definition Format (JDF) standard into its extensive Océ PRISMA® workflow management software family. This will open up Océ systems and allow customers to use Océ products with valuable third party or competitor applications.
