QLD publisher closes in-house print unit and signs Horton Media

The Warwick, Queensland-based publisher took the decision to close its printing operation after a feasibility study, part-funded by government grants, showed it would be cheaper to outsource its print.

MAMG co-owner Michael Pappalardo told ProPrint that the being a smaller printer made it “harder to get economies of scale” on consumerables, such as paper and ink.

Horton Media’s contract with MAMG includes the printing of all five of the company’s titles.

These include the weekly Southern Free Times, the monthly Bay Island Times, the fortnightly title Simply Redland, monthly title Poke, and quarterly wedding title Simply I Do.

Pappalardo said Horton Media came highly recommended when the company carried out its research.

“We’ve been in printing now and we do not want to be with a printer that’s being aggressive and under-cutting other people,” he added.

My Animal Media Group said it had interested parties in its equipment, which includes a four-colour Tokyo Kikai web press, Agfa platesetter and Harris Stitching machine, but has not sold the kit.

My Animal Media Group includes the following titles:

Title (frequency) – circulation
Southern Free Times (weekly) – 16,000
Bay Island Times (monthly) – 6,000
Simply Redland (fortnightly) – 45,000
Poke (monthly) – 7,000
Simply I Do (quarterly) – 16,000
