Renz makes short-run special effects a reality

Renz is demonstrating GMP Digital Sleeking, a type of film that is applied like any laminate and adheres to toner or HP Indigo ElectroInk.

The versatile Digital Sleeking creates a whole range of effects, including gloss, holographic, matte, metallic, clear and UV coating.

Renz sales director Paul Cohen said the effects can be applied using any laminator, as long as it had a take-up roller, including two devices on show at the Renz stand, the SureLam II-540 and the Protopic II-540.

He said the sleeking effect would work with any toner-printed material, adding that South Korean manufacturer GMP had worked closely with HP Indigo to develop the product.

The technology opens the door to in-house production of one-off or small quantities as well as larger runs of high-quality print embellishment. Cohen said it was already winning client by promising results at a fraction of the cost of conventional methods.

“If you have to send work out to spot varnish there is the minimum charge for set-ups, so this lends itself to a print-on-demand environment where runs are small and turnaround times are shorter,” said Cohen.
