Total OOH revenue up despite roadside billboard decline

Total revenues generated in the Out of Home (OOH) sector has increased by 5.2 per cent to $447.3m in half year 2019 results with all categories gaining ground except for roadside billboards which slipped from $179.9m to $176.7m in the period, the Outdoor Media Association (OMA) says.

This OMA half year results reflect the half year figures delivered by outdoor advertising company oOh!media yesterday which saw a nine per cent drop in revenue from roadside billboards in the first half of 2019 with the business posting a proforma 24 per cent drop in half year net profit after tax to $9 million.

This also came on the back of oOh!media downgrading its EBITDA guidance for the full year from between $152 million and $162 million to between $125 million and $135 million.

The OMA reported total net media revenue amounted to $447.3 million, as compared to $425.2 million for the same period in 2018, seeing an increase of 5.2 per cent driven by other roadside media, transport, as well as retail, lifestyle and other categories.

Category figures for roadside media including street furniture, bus/tram externals, and small format amounted to $126.1 million, up from the $117.1 million it reported last year.

The transport category brought in $82.6 million, up from $69.8 million in 2018.

As for the retail, lifestyle and other category, figures were at $61.8 million as compared to $58.3 million in 2018.

According to the Outdoor Media Association, digital OOH revenue accounts for 54 per cent of total net media revenue year-to-date, an increase over the recorded 49 per cent for the same period last year.

“Roadside billboards had a very strong first half in 2018 with growth of 15 per cent over the previous year. In 2019 we are seeing more growth in transit and billboards are maintaining strong revenue,” an Outdoor Media Association spokesperson said.
