tesa tape Australia has introduced a new simple but effective system designed for the flying splice of paper reels on web presses. New tesaEasySplice Printline offers greater reliability than traditional splicing products and lowers process costs.
Traditional splicing methods, according to tesa tape Australia marketing manager Tony Barker, are quite complicated and often involve excessive tape consumption and inordinately slow application times. While splice success rates using these traditional products can appear to be reasonably high, it is possible for the tesa system to increase these levels even further to in excess of 99 per cent, which reduces downtime due to splice breaks.
“We’ve basically developed this system to take over from traditional methods of flying splice. We have faster splice preparation, better splice security, less paper waste and ease of application” says Barker.
“The innovative design of the new system completely negates the need for troublesome nosetabs and labels and ensures a 100 per cent contact between the top sheet and reel. This raises the opportunity for the economies of centralised splicing and free movement of the paper reel from the splicing area to the reelstand without affecting the splice. It also eliminates the possibility of blown splices during roll acceleration caused by air getting trapped under the top sheet.”
Barker also believes that the fact that the EasySplice product takes only a third of the time to apply compared to traditional methods is another drawcard.
According to tesa, the total process cost situation in a printing plant depends on two parameters: efficient design of the process, and process stability. To optimise the total process cost situation, at least one of these parameters must be improved. Both these paramaters can be improved with the EasySplice Printline system, says tesa, because it allows for faster application, increased splice security and less wasted copies. Additionally, the prepared reel is made transportable and storable with this solution, which makes preparation ahead of time and even central splice preparation feasible, thus improving a company’s overall process design.
There are three main tesa EasySplice products currently available: the Printline, Printline Detect, and Printline Heat. All three products have the same basic product design. Due to a special adhesive strip on the back of the tape, complicated splicing patterns and use of fastning labels is no longer needed. The strip fixes the top sheet of the new reel securely across the total width and splits during the flying splice process to ensure a safe opening of the paper reel.
The tesa EasySplice Printline Detect also contains an integrated aluminium foil, which ensures a reliable detecion of the splice position. Detection labels are no longer needed and potential misplacement of the detection label can be avoided.
The EasySplice Printline Heat offers a temperature resistant contact adhesive to meet the requirements of passing the dryer in heatset-offset printing.
The new system has proven ideal for use in both magazine and newspaper wide and narrow web printing applications – heatset as well as coldset, and has already seen tesa tape grow its market share substantially since its release earlier in the year.
