“The demand is coming primarily from the packaging industry, which wants effects that will help the consumer find the packaging on the store shelves. The silver effect combined with the good printing surface makes it possible to create effects which can’t be achieved with silver ink, for instance,” says market and sales director Öystein Aksnes.
“But I think it’s likely that graphic designers will also be attracted by the possibilities which this material offers. The silver sheen is very clear and when you print on it you can achieve almost three-dimensional effects.”
Metalprint is manufactured at Ströms Bruk, which is Iggesund Paperboard’s expert facility for upgraded paperboard with added functions. The new product is being produced using materials from the company’s two paperboard families, Invercote and Incada, as a base, depending on the customer’s requirements.
“Normally when you laminate, any possible defects in the surface become extremely visible. That’s why the quality of the paperboard you’re starting with, as well as the lamination technique, is extremely important,” Aksnes says.
Ströms Bruk specialises in further refining paperboard by adding barriers against moisture, odour and taint. This is done by coating the paperboard with plastic in one or several layers, or in combination with foil depending on the required purpose. Expertise on coating or laminating paperboard is also used to make paperboard with special printing properties.
Iggesund Paperboard’s product catalogue comprises extensive documentation including specifications and samples of all the company’s paperboard grades. “We have a broader programme than ever before, and we also place great importance on supplying our customers with the information they need to really get the most out of the paperboard – and that’s true for every aspect, ranging from printing quality to runnability and production economics,” Aksnes concludes.
Iggesund Paperboard’s product catalogue can be ordered at the company’s website: www.iggesundpaperboard.com.
