Spandex has played a small role in raising money for Variety – The Children’s Charity, by providing vehicle wrap materials for one of the annual ‘bush bash’ entrants organised by Murray McInnes of Sydney training and development firm McInnes Partners.

Every year, Variety organises a fundraising bash for cars built before 1976, in a fun-filled rally in which scores of creatively-decorated old bangers vie for both line honours and amount raised through sponsorships.

The year’s event was a long one; from Bass Hill, NSW to Bunbury, WA via back roads – a distance of about 4,598km; definitely not as the crow flies. For the hardy or crazy an additional 3,800kms from Bunbury to Broome was on offer as a WA ‘mini bash.’

McInnes and his team added to the splendour of their 1966 Valiant Safari station wagon by dressing in floral suits and looking like something out of a Peter Allen concert. Towns along the way such as Narranderra, Moulamein, Mildura, Waikerie, Port Pirie, Ceduna, Eucla, Cocklebiddy, Balladonia, Esperance, Jerramungup and Albany would never have seen anything like it.

“We raised over $40,000 for the kids,” says a proud Murray McInnes, “and we’ve signed up for next year’s bash which runs from Berowra to Bowen in Far North Queensland.”

The proposed 2016 Variety Bash route is via Hamilton Island; which raises all sorts of questions concerning the amphibious capabilities of the cars! Hopefully the ferries to the Whitsunday paradise will cope.
