Innovationdays open with integration

The biggest event in print so far this year has got underway, with visitors to the bi-annual Hunkeler Innovationdays seeing integration as the main theme of the show.

Held in Switzerland, the strategic neutrality of the country is being played out by Hunkeler, which is hosting the event where competitors are working together to create end to end production solutions.

Printers are seeing finishing lines operating at the same speed as digital print systems, meaning there is no need to slow down the print, or buffer, or run off line finishing. Analysts say the event represents a leap in end to end automation.

Workflow management systems are front and centre, with visitors seeing finishing systems from the likes of Horizon and Muller Martini fully integrated into the digital eco system, sending command signals back to the printer.

Australian printers are among the expected 7000 visitors to the event, which eschews the glamour of drupa, but focuses on the working technology.

Many companies are launching new technology at the event including vendors such as HP, Kodak, Canon and Fuji Xerox.

Hunkeler placed its focus on disposal logistics for the printing and security industry. Disposal logistics play a central role in print finishing systems. The company says, “Only if the technology works faultlessly an economical operation of the overall system is secured. Disposal logistics must therefore be viewed as a component of the entire production system and included in planning from the start. At the Hunkeler Innovationdays 2017, Hunkeler Systeme AG will be using various exhibits to underline the importance of disposal logistics. The focus will be placed on finishing in the printing industry (offset and digital) and security printing.”

During the trade fair a large-scale suction system will ensure the disposal of paper scraps and milling dust on three-knife trimmers and binders for several exhibition partners. The system works according to the efficient vacuum principle: the air is cleaned of paper dust by a filter system and released into the atmosphere following purification. An energy saving system (ESS) and an automatic cut-off feature reduce the costs of system operation by up to 40 percent. 10 compact waste extraction systems of the HKU series will be used for the local disposal of production waste at several exhibition stands.

For national bank and security printing plants, Hunkeler Systeme AG has developed a system for the safe destruction of banknotes and other securities. The waste is shredded into particles with a diameter of six millimeters and pressed into compact briquettes. Pallets are identified via barcode and tracked in the workflow. The workflow is monitored via the brand new Hunkeler Control Manager.

Hunkeler Systeme AG will be presenting the Hunkeler Document Destruction System (HDDS-30) for the safe disposal of electronic components. The system destroys hard disks, laptops and desktop computers as well as paper files and documents. Information stored on data carriers is safely destroyed in accordance with DIN standard 66399.

Described as a paper processing exhibition, split into different sectors including book production, newspaper printing, brochure production, mailing production, security printing or transactional printing, the Hunkeler Innovationdays runs until Thursday.
