On Demand looks to “break records” with high-volume Oce inkjet web

The Melbourne-based company hosted two launch events last week, with the first aimed at On Demand’s customers and the second an open house for Océ to show the press to printers.

The first event last week gave On Demand’s customers a glimpse at the affordable variable data colour options of the machine, and the second showcase was held by Océ for some of Australia’s biggest printers.

The “hungry workhorse” uses a twin-engine configuration to reach a top speed of more than 1,000 pages per minute, with a duty cycle of 12 million A4 pages per month.

On Demand managing director Bruce Peddlesden said he was hoping to take the machine beyond these capabilities and has already lined up plenty of publishing and variable-data work.

“It is running beautifully. We have four million images running through it right now,” he told ProPrint.

“It is a hungry workhorse and it is proving very reliable. We like testing machines, we have set records with our HP Indigos in Asia-Pacific and we are hoping to do the same with the Océ.”

Océ Australia managing director Simon Wheeler said the ColorStream’s advantages include its ability to begin printing from a standing start, reducing wastage, the high quality of its output and its configuration flexibility.

“The ColorStream is positioned as a migration-to-colour press, allowing a conventional digital user to upgrade his equipment from monochrome through spot colour to full colour,” he said.

Another ColorStream 3500 has been purchased in Australia, but the mystery buyer is “holding his cards close to his chest”.
